What is a “Responsible Party”?

A responsible party is a person who holds a key role in overseeing, managing, or directing a legal entity’s financial decisions. These individuals typically serve in roles such as a CEO, Executive Director, President, CFO, Vice President, or treasurer, but do not necessarily need to hold one of these titles. We require a designated responsible party for each recipient to verify legal authority for decision-making and maintain transparent communication regarding your account.

The responsible party’s first and last name must be listed on at least one form of submitted documentation (e.g., registration, EIN letter, bank documentation).

• Nonprofit organizations: In the case of a nonprofit organization, the Executive Director, President, CEO, board chair, or treasurer typically fills the role of Responsible Party.
• Candidates: For a candidate’s campaign, the responsible party is usually the candidate themself or the campaign treasurer.
• Political Committees/PACs: For a political committee (like a PAC or caucus), this role is usually filled by the treasurer, though it could also be the Executive Director or President.
